Washing Machine Repairs

Washing machine

Washing machines are the most common machine i see needing repair. Repair is usually much cheaper and convenient than replacing it. Give me a call and I’ll book you in for a callout to diagnose any problem with your washer.

Model and serial numbers

When you contact me I will need the correct model and serial number for your machine. Providing me a photo of the serial sticker is the most accurate way to do this.

On front loaders the sticker is on the frame behind the door.

On top loaders the sticker is usually on the back but sometimes on the side. On Fisher & Paykel top loaders it is on the back of the control panel.

Common Issues with Washing Machines

Not Draining: Drain pumps can cause a few issues. Most obviously the machine won’t drain the water. Most of the time the pump impeller is obstructed by a coin or a hair clip or the like. Sometimes the filter is blocked up with lint. Pumps can overheat and fail due to these causes but most of the time removing the obstruction solves it.

Be sure to check the pockets of clothes before you wash them.

Not spinning is another complaint that can mean the pump is not draining properly as the drum won’t start spin drying the clothes unless the water level is low enough.

But not spinning can be caused by worn bearings, a failed motor controller or a broken belt. Main motors on washers are usually pretty reliable.

Some machines have a clutch and brake mechanism that can fail. These types of machines are less common these days but a failed brake or clutch can prevent a machine from agitating and/or spinning.

Out of balance errors on top loaders can be caused by the basket holes being blocked or the tub springs are worn.

Not working at all: If the machine is dead completely then the main controller is likely to be dead. Most machines have a controller and a motor controller but some are integrated into one board. This means if the motor controller fails them the machine will be dead and need this board replaced.
