Fridge Freezer Repairs

Inside Dishwasher

Fridges and freezers are generally very reliable. The refrigeration circuit on a fridge is still the same as it was 50 years ago. When the compressor fails it is usually time for a new machine.

However, apart from the compressor there are a few common problems that I can sort out with a fridge or freezer. Give me a call and I’ll book you in to diagnose any problem with your fridge freezer.

Model and serial numbers

When you contact me I will need the correct model and serial number for your machine. Providing me a photo of the serial sticker is the most accurate way to do this.

On most fridge freezers the sticker is either on the lower frame behind the freezer door or inside the fridge compartment on the side.

On a chest freeser the sticker is usually on the side of the machine nearest the maintenance hatch.

Common Issues with Fridge Freezers

Failing fans. Most modern fridge freezers have one internal fan. Some have more than one. Failed fans can cause a number of complaints. The most common is when a fridge compartment does not cool but the freezer is fine. A fan in this case is what draws cool air from the freezer to cool the fridge.

Blown defrost element. Frost free works by periodically heating the cooling element to melt buildup of ice. If the heating element has failed the cooling element will block up and prevent airflow. This will result in a fridge compartment not cooling also. Sometimes a bad element can trip the house circuit the appliance is connected to.

Blocked defrost drain. If you freezer compartment starts leaking then you can be sure that the defrost drain has blocked. Turning the machine off with the doors open for a couple of days can solve the problem but the initial blockage will still remain and the problem will return.

Failed thermostat. This problem is less common but can occur. Modern fridges and freezers have an electronic controller – if these go the machine will be dead but replacing the controller is an easy fix. Older machines have a mechanical thermostat these are cheap but a little fiddlier to replace.

Flat Heater Alarm: Double door fridges often have a middle flap that sits between the two doors. This swings out of the way when you open the door. They have a heater on them so that moisture does not condensate on the flap. The heater is powered via a cable and this cable often breaks. This causes an alarm so sound. Repairing the cable is usually a simple soldering job.

All of these faults can be sorted easily provided the manufacturer still has the parts available.
